Hair Transplant Graft Calculator

Choose your Norwood stage, the areas you want covered and your hair type to see an estimated graft count, how much of your donor area it uses, and whether one session is likely to be enough.

How the Graft Calculator Works

The estimate is calculated as area to be covered (cm²) × target density (grafts per cm²) × zone grading × hair-type factors.

  • Zones: the frontal hairline and temples (about 45 cm²) are planned at full density, the mid-scalp (about 50 cm²) at 75% and the crown (about 40 cm²) at 65%, which is how a natural-looking result is usually graded.
  • Hair type: fine hair needs about 15% more grafts and coarse hair about 15% fewer; wavy and curly hair need 5% and 10% fewer.
  • Donor area: the back and sides of the head have a limited safe supply. The calculator compares your estimate with typical limits for thin, average and dense donor areas, and shows whether one session is likely to be enough.

Once you know the approximate graft count, you can estimate your hair transplant cost, or read about FUE hair transplant and EnRiched-FUE at SkinQure.

Graft Calculator FAQs

How many grafts do I need for a hair transplant?

It depends on the area to be covered and the target density. As a guide, restoring the hairline and mid-scalp (Norwood IV) at 40 grafts per cm² needs around 3,000 to 3,500 grafts for medium-thickness straight hair. The final number is set by the surgeon after a scalp assessment.

How many grafts can be transplanted in one session?

With an average donor area, up to about 3,500 grafts can typically be harvested safely in one session. Larger requirements are usually split into two sessions, 8 to 12 months apart.

Why does hair type change the number of grafts?

Thick (coarse), wavy or curly hair covers more scalp per graft, so fewer grafts are needed for the same look. Fine, straight hair needs more grafts to look equally full.

Is the calculator result my final graft count?

No. It is an educational estimate. Your actual graft count depends on donor density, miniaturisation and expected future hair loss, and is decided by the surgeon after a trichoscopy-based scalp assessment at SkinQure.
